(from a June 2011 interview) "As the …school year (continues), we are working to connect with community centers and after-school programs in order to reach a broader base of young people and introduce them to this art form, " said Karen Gordon, JazzForKids program director.

Gordon hosted four JazzforKids: sing, clap, wiggle, shake! programs in December 2011 and January 2012 in the Aiken-Augusta area and traveled to Cheraw, SC, to present the program in two elementary school as part of the South Carolina Jazz Festival‘s education component. Gordon is currently accepting performance requests for April 2012, National Jazz Appreciation Month, and well into the summer.

Garden City Jazz presents several programs annually in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), providing performance opportunities for area musicians and music students, while promoting awareness of the historical and cultural significance of jazz music.

We’ve added six Richmond County elementary school presentations to the jazz calendar. Thanks Augusta Jazz Project & Rudy Volkmann! #jazzlives

The Social Studies Department of Richmond County School System presents “Taking Notes: Jazz and the American Story” at area high schools.

February 2, 2012

Feb 1, 2012 – Augusta GA

The Social Studies Department of Richmond County School System presents “Taking Notes: Jazz and the American Story” at area high schools. The presentation is a product of a partnership between the Richmond County School System’s Curriculum Department and Garden City Jazz, a local non-profit organization led by Ms. Karen Gordon.

The purpose of this program is to provide students with an engaging learning experience that appeals to them visually and musically and helps them make the connections between what was going on in America and how those changes were reflected in a music that is often described as “the sound of democracy”. Too often, students are presented with history from the page of a textbook, but history is most interesting when it is told as a story…and it is even more powerful when primary sources such as photographs and music are included in the story.

Taking Notes: Jazz & the American Story takes the audience on a journey through time, revealing the connections between major events in American history and Jazz’s evolution since the 1700′s. The presentation includes a 4 piece jazz ensemble which includes two members of James Brown’s band. The presentation concludes with a segment that explains the connection between Hip-Hop and Jazz music…presented by a DJ Big Meal from Bronx, NY.

The presentation is narrated by Andre Mountain, the Professional Learning Specialist for Social Studies.
